Grain-Gold: The first annual release of Compass Box Hedonism
Compass Box Hedonism is released today in a limited annual bottling – combining whisky craftsmanship and art to create a range of collectable blended grain Scotch whiskies.
Compass Box has already celebrated several firsts with Hedonism. The blended grain scotch was the first bottling ever released by the whiskymakers and was the first of its kind to pave the way for the category of blended grain whiskies from Scotland. Hedonism was also the first whisky to feature a female character on the label. Now the award-winning Compass Box classic is celebrating its premiere as a limited annual bottling.
The reason? Over the 23 years since its creation by John Glaser, demand for high-quality grain whisky has increased throughout Scotland. Finding the required quality of whisky for Hedonism is becoming an ever greater challenge. Once a year, limited editions of around 8,000 bottles will interpret the beloved Hedonism style. The stocks used for this will have an average age of between 18 and 20 years.
The Limited Annual Release 2024 is also the start of an artistic collaboration: every year a different talented artist will reinterpret the grace and strength of the iconic hedonistic woman for the label design. On this year's bottling, she will be made to shine by the artist Stephanie Rew. To do this, the Scottish artist combines traditional gilding techniques from the early Renaissance with a contemporary painting style.
If you want to find out more: The short film “From Grain to Gold”, which Compass Box is releasing to celebrate the launch, documents the history of the blended grain whisky and the collaboration with Stephanie Rew.
The 2024 version of Hedonism is based on more mature whiskies from the Cameronbridge, Girvan and Port Dundas distilleries, which were matured almost exclusively in first fill bourbon barrels. The effect: impressively deep vanilla and toffee notes and a wonderfully soft start.
In addition, the Limited Annual Release 2024 includes Compass Box's last stocks of grain whiskies distilled in the 1990s - a time when some of the distilleries involved used corn for their mash, giving the overall composition an additional buttery richness.
Bottled in 7,746 collectible bottles, the blended grain Scotch whisky offers connoisseurs a complex taste experience of caramel, spicy honey, mascarpone and lush vanilla, culminating in a fine citrus finish.
